Name:
Location: Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, United States

Born in Columbus, Ohio, I graduated from OSU and then studied to be a college math professor (Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico in 1967), but after several years teaching at Bowling Green State University (Ohio) and the University of Pittsburgh, PA, I got sidetracked into a career in computers and eventually in publishing. I retired in 1999 from a 25-year career with Ziff-Davis Publishing Company in New York where I had been Vice President of Circulation Systems. Now Mary Ann (my wife) and I "do genealogy", enjoy our Gettysburg home, and travel.

Another Year -- Another 1000 cousins

I see it has been nearly a year since I have posted to the blog.

I have an excuse -- I am STILL finding relatives at the rate of about 100/month.

I started my search for descendants of the immigrant, Ambrose Remeli some years ago, prompted by the realization that if I was to locate contemporary cousins I needed to have an organized framework that tied folks back to the immigrant. I found a genealogical program called Brother's Keeper about 15 years ago and have continued to use through several updates and variations. I rarely encounter relatives "by accident".

My MO is to follow obits (the Allentown Morning Call is a great source) and see if I can tie folks into Ambrose and then try to locate the current locations of family members in the obit. If possible, I will contact the person, verify that the connection is correct and then send a PDF attachment report that gives the person their complete history up the line to Ambrose. I include all source citations and so in this way the person has a jump start on their own genealogy. It's a fun thing.

As of a count today, I now have over 18,023 descendants of Ambrose.

No big break on the major unlinked line, but I did encounter a cousin sitting next to me at the Easton Library a few months ago and he supplied me with a very large number of obits of Remaleys that he had been collecting over the years. I am still working through the list and breaking new ground almost daily.

If you or someone you know has a Ramaley (Remaley, Remaly, Ramaly, etc.) in their background, let me know and I'll see how they fit in. Maybe I'll spark their own interest and that is my goal.
